Candle Care + Maintenance

How to Care + Maintain your coconut apricot soy blend candle

While some of these may seem obvious, before I got into candle making I was not aware of the importance of candle wick trimmers nor what appropriate burn times were. Here are a few reminders and instructions on how to care for and maintain your luxe candles so you are able to maximize usage and aesthetics.

Keep Away from Children, Pets, and Flammable Objects: Ensure your candle is placed safely out of reach and away from anything that could catch fire.

Never Leave Unattended: Always burn your candle within sight and never leave it unattended.

Trim the Wick: For optimal performance, trim your cotton wick to 1/4" before each use to minimize smoke and to extend burn time. Remove any wick trimmings before relighting. Consider adding a candle wick trimmer to your purchase for convenience.

Initial Burn: When lighting your candle for the first time, allow it to burn for 2-3 hours to achieve an even melt across the surface and to help prevent tunneling.

Keep Wax Pool Clean: Ensure the wax pool is free from wick trimmings and other debris. Avoid burning the candle for more than 3-4 hours at a time to prevent overheating of the jar. Important to note, label and glass vessel may darken and discolor if this occurs.

Handle with Care: Never touch the candle jar while it is lit, as it can become extremely hot.

Cool Before Handling: Allow the candle to cool completely before touching or moving it.

Stop Usage Before It Burns Out: Discontinue use when only 1/2" of wax remains to prevent overheating and ensure safety. Important to note, label and glass vessel may discolor if this occurs.

Upcycle your Candle Jar! Repurpose + Reuse Your Vessel: Once your candle is finished, consider repurposing the jar. There are a variety of methods advised to get rid of the small remaining bit of wax. Better Homes & Gardens has some great suggestions on how to get wax out of candle jars! When your vessel is clean, here are some jar repurposing ideas that give your jar new life:

  • Reuse jar as a small planter/plant propagator: perfect for a terrarium, or a small plant! Just remember to place small stones on the bottom to help with drainage

  • Small flower vase thats not only functional but effortlessly beautiful

  • Organize your desk by holding pens, scissors, highlighters, staple remover, paperclips, and other nicknacks

  • Bathroom organizer: A variety of ideas! Great to hold:

    • Hairbrushes, scrunchies, hair-pins

    • Q-Tips or Cotton balls

    • Bath bombs or bath salts

    • Toothbrushes, floss, & toothpaste holder

  • Organize makeup brushes, mascara, eyeliner etc

  • Nightstand organizer for creams, eye glasses

  • Store your candle supplies! Store your matches, electric lighter, and/or candle wick trimmer easily, so you always know where to find them

Eventually my plan is to offer scented candle refills so that each candle vessel can be used more than once. But as I am still testing this, I cannot put it to market, so please repurpose your candle vessel in any number of ways listed above or otherwise. The sky is the limit! Please do not use glass jar as a drinking glass, as the material used is not considered food safe.

Spruce Street Candle Co. uses a vegan blend of natural apricot, coconut, soy, and a minuscule amount of highly refined food-grade paraffin wax. Scientific studies have proven paraffin wax to burn just as cleanly as soy, beeswax, or palm. The highly refined food-grade nature of the paraffin puts it in the natural category. You can learn more in this study performed by the National Candle Association. Natural waxes may develop a frosted appearance or slight discoloration, which does not affect the candle’s quality or performance. Enjoy the unique characteristics of each candle and consider their subtle differences as part of their charm, knowing you're supporting a woman-owned small business that cares about animals and thoughtfully sources ingredients, fragrance oils, and supplies to ensure all products are animal testing-free.
